Are You Ready for AR Transformation in Your Industry?

On April 9, the first augmented reality-guided surgery took place in the United States.

At Boston’s New England Baptist Hospital, a surgical team performing complete hip replacement used cutting-edge AR technology to parse 3D patient data in real time.

The system is the first-ever intraoperative AR guidance platform for joint replacement, approved by the FDA in January. The inventor, Dr. Steve Murphy, is a New England Baptist Hospital orthopedic surgeon.

This groundbreaking system coordinates a surgeon’s head-mounted lenses with a tracker on the patient. Each physician benefits from anatomical information in precise detail, enabling implants to be placed effectively under multiple layers of tiny incisions. Small differences can make a big impact on post-surgical prognosis.

Patient Toni Clapp has been up and walking with a fast, comfortable recovery.

AR Is Modern Medicine’s New Frontier

The Boston procedure was performed in a traditional on-site surgical theater. But as AR continues to advance, it will challenge assumptions about how barriers of time and distance affect care.

Robot-assisted surgery is already commonplace in certain areas of specialization, and evidence for its effectiveness continues to mount. Augmented Reality will soon make it possible to benefit from the dexterity and precision of robotic devices alongside the enhanced perception of AR.

5G wireless could further push the boundaries on medical AR, enabling its use for surgical teams hundreds of miles away from their patients. And with quantum computing just around the corner, it may someday be possible for well-equipped healthcare organizations to perform surgeries worldwide.

Are You Ready for AR Transformation in Your Industry?

AR’s influence is expanding every day – to logistics, manufacturing, construction, and more. To maximize its benefits, preparations must begin today.

That means:

  • Upgrading mobile infrastructure to face new demands without loss of performance
